As others have said it's probably not unrelated and even if it is, it's still probably a punishment that will hurt the most. I mean, I can't say if she made the right decision or not, I don't know the context of their family and stuff, but I'm pretty much ok with a parent taking away gifts.

As far as money goes, if the child feels like he's being unfairly treated he can just tough it up or retaliate against the parent (by stealing or slashing their tires or whatever), or he can contact CPS and try to join another family. I think if he's over 16 he can probably get emancipated and move out.
