OK cool, juuust checking. The steel is most likely 440A a low ish end stainless, similar to the Chinese 8Cr13MoV. A pro should be able to put a good edge on it, but don't expect it to hold.

Don't want to rain on your parade, but rather advise: be careful with that thing, it's crap. Sorry.

We had made some in the past as a limited run that I used as gifts for people, but at the moment we do not have a neck knife. The best made and designed neck knives, in my opinion, are from Brous Blades

The wood comes from Maple burl, which is like a growth on the tree, known for having totally crazy grain patterns. To make it stronger, it is "stabilized" - that is pressure treated (impregnated) with polymer resins. During that process we can also add dye, in this case blue, to color it. Normally it comes kind of a bland brownish color. Box Elder burl, Rosewood burl, are also really popular in custom knifemaking.

This is one of the most expensive models. We have simpler, full-tang knives that start at around $180.

After graduating, my father, who has been in business his entire life, approached me and asked to help him start a brand of kitchen gadgetry with a focus on cutlery. It is rather unclear how he decided on that specific product, but it had a lot to do with ceramic cutlery and how much it was growing as a category. Those products were factory made in China. So we did that for awhile, but I wasn't too stoked on it. No part of me wanted to peddle generic Chinese stuff. Then we found an "in" for this small foundry in Russia. That was entirely by chance, fostered by being in the cutlery world. Myself being Russian there was a lot of history there for me. On top of that, selling something truly artisan is much much better. I love seeing people pick up a knife and instantly understand why it costs $400 (they're not all that expensive). So I masterminded the Olamic Cutlery brand, it was founded on 10/10/10. We're still going strong and growing, and my faith in the product is higher than ever before. The type of feedback I receive from my customers is absolutely outstanding. There are many many exciting things happening as well, so I'll keep r/knives posted.

I run the company that makes these, so this one will go out to a lucky customer soon enough, and then they can frame it! Either way, I have enough to enjoy for now...

It's amazing just how unbelievably awesome dyed burl looks. I've had this thing on my desk all day and I can't stop looking at it.

I'm going to start making custom knife handles. What do you guys think about this damascus blade in terms of quality? by spencerawrin knives

[–]imabananayesiam 0 points1 point ago

That's probably because when the handle was being finished the pattern got ground off and not re-etched.

1075/15N12 is the most common combination of steels for American-made Damascus... so I think that blank is just fine. The pattern stops because the tang is not Damascus but a softer steel that's welded on (kind of weird actually but... okay).

I'm not saying that is a bad knife - in fact, it's rather good for what it is. However, it's part of Boker's Chinese-made line and so this particular "Damascus", although indeed LAYERED, is not FOLDED, and thus falls into the category of "Laminated Damascus". That particular knife probably has either 440C or VG-10 at the core and then 12ish layers of a softer steel (probably 420 stainless) on each side. I have a sample around somewhere of a knife by that same manufacturer with the same steel. The build quality is great for China.
