LPT: Measuring how much butane/propane is left in the canister. by puppeteer107in CampingandHiking

[–]jddlwlr 4 points5 points ago

The autoignition point of Butane is 288C and propane is 500 something, while water boils at 100C. Ignition is not a danger.

It occurs to me now that you could be referring to the gas just expanding from being warmed. To that I would say just don't run very much water over your tanks/ warm them for very long. Think of it this way: All your trying to do is put in enough heat to warm up a thin piece of metal.

Another way is to run hot water over the canisters, then feel for the boundary between cool and warm. The metal of the canister will get warm, but where it is in contact with liquid it will stay relatively cool. Make sense?

Was the Geological Time Scale perfected using carbond dating or examining rock layers? by paul63in geology

[–]jddlwlr 2 points3 points ago

The scale was made originally using paleontology, as zombiegodzilla said. Then the absolute age ranges were later added using radiometric dating as darwinornis said. So sort of both.

Edit: This is almost exactly what Gargantua13013 said. I have now cited every other comment but one.

Been wanting to get a bike for a while, but pretty scared of the whole proposition. Can you guys help with some questions? by vikdeesin motorcycles

[–]jddlwlr 0 points1 point ago

It was a rhetorical question. Of course you don't! Your best bet might be to haul an extra backpack with you to work so you have a place to stash your gear and boots. It won't be a big deal.

A note on footwear: Tennis shoes, or the like, tend to get immediately ripped off your feet in an accident. Then you are just barefoot. OP, do you want to crash barefoot?

Mt. Everest Height Mystery May be Answered by anutensilin geology

I've always been stunned by the fact that they were able to calculate, within 26 feet, the height of Everest so long ago and from so far away. That is some incredible surveying and computing.

My little sister has down syndrome, is 18, and has worn out about 7 'Trouble With Friends' books since she was 10. She loves the page where Lizzy and Sister get into a fight for her pointer (which broke in two!) and wears the book out by constantly turning to that page. R.I.P Jan.
