Political Revolution in Germany: Pirate Party is Country's Third Strongest Party in New Poll: "...the political newcomers currently enjoy 13% of voter support and are now the third most popular party in the country ahead of the Greens, which lagged behind at 11%." by maxwellhillin worldnews

It is true that they have a lot of similarities in their programs when it comes to civil liberties. Indeed, FDP member Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger achieved some victories on this front (internet censorship, data retention, ...). However, I got the impression that recently the rest of the FDP has focussed more on serving the rich and being dishonest than really caring all that much for civil liberties anymore.

Indeed. Should the Pirate Party be able to hold its third place in the German party system, it will be quite an influential opposition in parlament. If it gained even more points, it might even become part of a governmnet colation, though this would probably be too early for this young party during their first appearance in national parlament. In fact, you can already observe all of our established parties panicking and trying to do good "internet stuff" now (establishing working groups that should deal with internet rights, etc.).

This list is what they say they stand for (well, approximately). In reality, many of them throw their positions out the window whenever it is politically opportune.

7.4% or even 9% are completely astounding numbers for a very new party in Germany. The German media is pretty much only reporting about the Pirate Party every other day now since months.

Very roughly:

Greens = environmental protection

Social democrats (SPD) = workers' rights (well, a long time ago...)

CDU = general conservative party

liberals (FDP) = less taxes and more freedoms for companies and the rich

Lefts (Linke) = social justice, more money for the poor, etc.

I guess the subreddit is just really empty?

I guess most people will know how this works and how it gets your username, but if anyone is wondering: r/uglypeoplealliance is a "normal" subreddit, but with a custom CSS stylesheet: http://www.reddit.com/r/uglypeoplealliance/stylesheet.css?v=b9e5bc6b28ee4404a013db473d2e0b4a

This stylesheet contains sections like:

span.user a.login-required:after {
    content: "You are beautiful.";
    font-size: 48pt
}

which puts the "You are beautiful" text right after your login name (which is always somewhere on the page anyways). And of course it formats your login name to look like this text and hides all the regular stuff you would see on a subreddit normally.

G+ doesn't even have a "wall", so you'd have to make a normal post shared explicitly with the birthday person, which is awkward.
