I'm going to guess that he is a grey belt not black. It is a step between white and yellow in the new kids ranking system of the IBJJF. There is no option for blackbelt in BJJ for kids (generally speaking of course, and not knowing for sure the kid is from a BJJ school let alone one that follows the IBJJF)
