Japan for a week in July, alone. Should I? by scudmongerin travel

[–]krampus 1 point2 points ago

Completely safe and loads of fun. The language barrier shouldn't be much of a problem as a lot of Japanese people will bend over backwards to help you even if they can't speak English.

One caveat, though: it's hot and humid as hell here in the summer and Kansai (Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, etc.) may be facing a power crunch.

Still, though, great place.

A few pictures from my trip to Mongolia in 2011. by Asmodeanein travel

I've wanted to visit Mongolia for quite a while, but my wife doesn't seem too interested. It looks absolutely beautiful. Any idea what I could say to convince her?

"nai desu" is a little less formal than "arimasen", but more formal than just "nai".

How to talk about family in Japanese by PickledEggsin LearnJapanese

Thanks! Yeah, I know they all mean death, was just wondering if there's a difference in usage like there is between "die" and "pass away" in English.

Do you know what differences in nuance there are between 亡 and 死亡 and 永眠? Sorry if slightly off topic, just curious.

Actually, Tokyo will probably be fine, as TEPCO is expected to have a power surplus this summer. Kansai may be in for some trouble, though, if they don't restart the Oi reactor.

The news items are very vague and don't seem to be filtering through to my searches - or they don't exist - so r/askscience, what's going on at Fukushima? What do people NEED to know right now about the situation there? by phidel_kashflowin askscience

Actually, Kanto and Tohoku are expected to have power surpluses this summer. Kansai, in particular, is in for a hurting if they don't restart the Oi reactor in Fukui.

I tend to think that if Nirvana hadn't been so successful, Cobain would still be around today. I.e., no "Teen Spirit"=Kurt's alive.

Bartering and Haggling in Foreign Lands by alan_sin travel

[–]krampus 2 points3 points ago

Haggling is pretty much unheard of in Japan, except for maybe the Kansai area (Osaka, Kobe, etc.), where I suppose it's done from time to time. I think a lot of Japanese people might get offended if you tried it here and that Titibu is being sarcastic.

Japan is indeed an anomaly. It's the only first world country outside of America and Europe. Sugokunai?

If you've never been here, it's hard to understand. It's Asia, for sure, but it isn't Cambodia.

Am I being a baby? Questions re: sore back by BetterJoshin weightroom

[–]krampus 6 points7 points ago

In my experience, "sitting" on an injury just makes it worse. Do the same exercise again, slowly, with light weight. This helps pinpoint what exactly went wrong.

Focus on form over weight.
