I've downvoted you since I don't think this is the appropriate sub-reddit for your link. You might want to try posting it to /r/motorcycles instead.

My ISP (Virgin Media) has blocked the Pirate Bay. How can I get around the block? by irock97in AskReddit

[–]merlin4334 1 point2 points ago*

If you use Chrome, you can use the Redirector extension in conjunction with a proxy site to bypass the block. This ensures that all links you click are redirected to the proxy site (as opposed to navigating to the proxy manually every time), but you're dependent on that proxy remaining active for this to work.

Someone with more knowledge of RegEx could probably improve this to handle thepiratebay.se in addition to thepiratebay.org, but a basic rule would look something like this:

Match string: http://thepiratebay.org/*
Substitution: thepiratebay.org
Replacement: tpb.pirateparty.org.uk

Such a well-written article; it's a shame that a long-standing and demonstrably ineffective policy has contributed so needlessly to this situation.

Perhaps one day we'll be able to visit all of our Caribbean neighbors legally. When we can, I'll be sure to adhere to the CUC $10 minimum.

Hitler today – book cover a friend of mine did by xxonin pics

He looks so much more human and much less like the personification of evil that he's normally associated with (rightly). I struggled to recognise him, and did a feature-to-feature comparison to see if his underlying facial structure had been photoshopped.

Also: Does Godwin's Law apply in threads about Hitler?

Current employer might send me from US to London. How hard is it to get indefinite leave to remain, or whatever other status is equivalent to permanent residency? by devrelmin IWantOut

In the UK, "graduate-level" implies someone with a university degree, including bachelor's degrees, so you should be fine without a Master's or PhD. The UK Border Agency publishes a list of approved Intra Company Transfer graduate-level occupations [warning: pdf]. For the Tier 2 (General) visa, your job must be on the Shortage List [warning: pdf] in order to receive enough points to obtain the visa.

Parts of it are currently down for maintenance/upgrade, but you can access the Points-based Calculator that should guide you through the different requirements for each visa type (e.g. correct job type, appropriate company sponsorship, etc.)

Whether you'll be able to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) depends on what visa you're issued as part of your employment, but there is a specific category of UK visas called the Tier 2 (Intra Company Transfer) visa for situations such as the one you're describing.

The usual route to obtaining ILR via a work visa (as opposed to marrying a local, for example) requires several stages: the initial 3-year visa period; a 2-year visa extension; and a settlement application after 5 years of residency.

Unfortunately, the rules for the Intra Company Transfer visa were modified in April 2010 [see the first paragraph of this UK Parliament PDF], and this type of visa can no longer be used to obtain ILR.

If your company is serious about sending you, and you are serious about committing five years of your life in the UK, I suggest you speak with your HR or Legal departments about other visa options that can still be used to obtain ILR, such as the Tier 2 (General).

When I was nearly seven, I was staying with my father's girlfriend and her two kids for the weekend. Her youngest, a boy, found of some of his mom's lipstick and tried to draw on me with it. Fearing The Cooties, I naturally fled, and an epic chase ensued.

I'd seen his mother cleaning the sliding glass door not long before, so when I rounded the corner of the hallway into the living room and looked straight out into the back yard with nary a reflection in sight, I assumed she'd left the door open.

She hadn't.

I ran straight through the sheet of plate glass, and ended up with lots of cuts -- the largest split the entire front half of my shin, which they were thankfully able to stitch back together nicely.

Twenty years later, I still wonder how she managed to get that sliding glass door so clean ...

Sorry for the delayed response, and you are correct that the page is filed under the small business/self-employed section of the website, but that doesn't mean it only applies to small businesses. A separate page defines the requirements for claiming the FEIE:

General Rule

To qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion, a U.S. citizen or resident alien must:

That's correct, each marriage partner is entitled to claim the exclusion. The IRS has this to say on the subject:

If married and both individuals work abroad and both meet either the bona fide residence test or the physical presence test, each one can choose the foreign earned income exclusion. Together, they can exclude as much as $175,200 for the 2008 tax year. [irs.gov]

Furthermore, my understanding is that your spouse is eligible to claim the exemption when you file jointly even if they're not a US citizen. So if you married a foreign national and your combined income is less than twice the FEIE limit, you would be able exempt all of your foreign-earned income from US taxation. Note that if your combined income exceeded that limit, however, joint filing exposes your foreign partner to US tax liability, so it's not sensible in every circumstance.

Yes and no: for 2011, you can claim an exemption of $92,900, which means if you earn less than that you won't pay any US federal income tax. If you earn more than the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (and assuming don't have any other exemptions or deductions you can claim -- I'm not sure how multiple deductions work when claiming the FEIE), you would be liable for tax payments only on the amount that exceeds $92,900.

Assuming you're single, the marginal tax rate for $92,901 is 28%, so you'd pay $0.00 for everything up to $92,900 and $0.28 on that final dollar. As you earn more, you might find yourself transitioning into the higher tax brackets.
