Six Fonts That Piss People Off by iamstandingbehindyouin typography

[–]metaphorever 4 points5 points ago

There was a very thorough critique of Gill Sans posted here a while ago that addresses the shortcomings of the font on a purely technical level. Here's the link: Eric Gill got it wrong; a re-evaluation of Gill Sans. That said, I DO hate Gill Sans Ultra with a passion. It just looks plain goofy and uneven most of the time.

I think the Helvetica hate is directed at more at the culture that surrounds it than the font itself. Like you said, there's nothing wrong with it if you know when and where it is appropriate and you treat it with some care.

No, this is an example of copyright infringing birds. That's actually more of a trademark violation.

Quick question, sites for thought experiments? by captainwafflesin philosophy

Have you looked at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Thought_experiments yet? It's not comprehensive but it covers a lot of the classics.

Are there any good fonts for kids that AREN'T Comic Sans? by oh_okay_in typography

[–]metaphorever 1 point2 points ago

I agree completely that children deserve good type. To me it seems like the same problem we have with adults who only speak 'baby talk' to children and end up confusing their pronunciation and vocabulary development because the parents want them to go on saying 'da da' rather than graduating to 'dad' or, God forbid, "father".

Can we change the name of the SFW porn network? Having the word "porn" in my history kind of defeats the purpose by cragelrain AskReddit

[–]metaphorever 64 points65 points ago

It has several very specific meanings including "the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction <the pornography of violence>" quoted from Merriam-Webster

[edit] the entry at dictionary.com is even more explicit: "television shows, articles, photographs, etc., thought to create or satisfy an excessive desire for something, especially something luxurious: the irresistible appeal of food porn; an addiction to real-estate porn."

You can find who registered the domain using a whois lookup but be aware that the registrant listed may not be the person who's site this is but it's a place to start.

What is the worst advice you've ever received? by sophalopein AskReddit

[–]metaphorever 0 points1 point ago

Do you have a reliable citation for that? I just did some poking around 'not' not only has over a billion more uses but it makes more sense, to me, given the context. "More often than 'naught'" would just be more than zero which could work and doesn't carry the same weight as "more often than 'not'" which I interpret as being a truncation of "[it happens] more often than [it does] not [happen]".

what are somethings that are great to buy at the dollar store? what are somethings you should NEVER buy? by LacAttackin Frugal

I think it will fix itself if you edit in an extra line break in between "items:" and the first * in your list. Reddit's markdown requires a double line break to separate paragraphs.

Where can I go to have a silk screen made of my logo so that I can make my own t-shirts? by Ra__in printmaking

The magnet idea sounds interesting, it should give you solid masking. I'd suggest trying that using an aerosol fabric paint like this.

Where can I go to have a silk screen made of my logo so that I can make my own t-shirts? by Ra__in printmaking

[–]metaphorever 1 point2 points ago

Full disclosure: I work for a t-shirt printer and we'd be happy to print these for you if you are looking to do a dozen or more.

Now, if you want to print these properly you will need 1. a screen 2. a way to coat the screen with photo emulsion, UV expose it (that's the 'burning' part) and pressure-wash out the exposed screen (and later the rest of the screen using reclaimer) 3. a press or clamp table to print on 4. plastisol ink 5. a screenprinting squeegee and 6. a way to heat cure the ink.

The screen you can build and stretch yourself. You can avoid photo emulsion entirely if you use contact paper instead. You can fake the press various ways and you can heat cure in an oven.

That still seems like a fair amount of work/money/effort compared to the payoff. Have you considered using bleach instead. You stencil your design in contact paper (adhesive backed paper or plastic) stick it on a dark shirt, mist a bleach-water mix onto the shirt and then wash it after some of the color has been removed. The contact paper should give you a much cleaner stencil than what you tried before since it is stuck to the shirt and not just sitting on top of it.

I can break down the printing process and what is required (and how to fake it) in more detail if you want. I just want you to know what you're getting yourself into. Screen printing is lots of fun but it does require specialized tools and a studio space to use them in.

We're always trying to save money. What's are some things we should just bite the bullet on? by imustbedeadin Frugal

[–]metaphorever 17 points18 points ago

I think the traditional answers to this question are shoes and a bed. You spend a third of the day using them, that means you should spend what it takes to have good ones. You can apply this reasoning to any other item that you use a lot every day.

Critique my new font! by plosajcin typography

[–]metaphorever 0 points1 point ago

That's the same file. I think they want one resaved with aliasing turned on. Right now when you view it at full size it has jaggy hard pixel edges.

In general I think I prefer your alternate characters for g, k, y (the straight one) A, g and K better than the 'standard' ones you've made. I'd get rid of the connecting lines on the ! and ? as it makes them look like something other than punctuation. For the ampersand all but the very top one look too top heavy and unbalanced, I would try some other variations that keep the heavy strokes lower in the character. Overall it's interesting but it feels like some letters lack flow. Out of curiousity are these based on letters that you drew out by hand using a calligraphy pen or is it all digital?

Once a claim enters the mainstream media, it’s hard to put the genie back in the bottle. PolitiFact researches how a sketchy and now defunct firm's "survey" fact about the number of "boomerang kids" was used in a GOP Super Pac ad and echoed repeatedly in the national media without any scrutiny. by monabonain TrueReddit

[–]metaphorever 22 points23 points ago

Even worse, in my opinion, is that sometimes because of a combination anti-intellectualism and the 'teach-the-controversy' style reporting present in many pundit narrated entertainment news shows can create a situation where the attempts by well meaning scientists and academics to explain the errors in reporting can actually serve to push people further away and increase their doubts. Since the original reporting fits within the political narrative or facilitates an emotional reaction that fits with their preconceived views the attempts at debunking or setting the record straight are seen not just as an attack on that specific 'fact' or statistic but as an attack on the whole ideology that the viewer has attached to it. Combine this with hostile hosts, creative editing and the other tools of entertainment news and an appearance by a statistician trying to explain methodological flaws can end up being perceived as an 'elitist coverup of this attack on American values'.

If a law passed requiring an iq/lifeskills test in order to procreate would you vote for it? by MastodonMetalin AskReddit

[–]metaphorever 0 points1 point ago

Just curious: how did you score on the test I linked? I like to think I have a decent working knowledge of civics but many of those questions were quite difficult. It's easy to say this policy is OK if we "just make sure they're done right" but like most statements that include the word "just" it's really a lot harder do in reality, especially when you're dealing with the complexities of the law in a way that abridges fundamental rights.

Read up on the history of literacy tests, how they were used to disenfranchise people and why they were outlawed before you start advocating for them to be restored. I also suggest you see if you can pass this sample test from 1965.

You should make a request post on /r/Enhancement asking for an option to hide child comments on posts by users that you've tagged as "ignore". You're right it's pretty pointless to just ignore them if you still see the aftermath of their posts.
