this was a beautiful character development element that we missed out on.

Mal used to believe in God, but after the battle of Serenity, he gave up belief in anything but surviving and staying ahead of the alliance. Book kept challenging him to look for something bigger, and was the impetus for Mal's 'final stand' in the movie.

the Maclean's article was clear to state that the researchers didn't consider illiberal religious rules to constitute religious freedom. They consider basic human rights to trump any rules that an individual religion may impose.

only you'll be able to answer that for yourself. Does the movie take a step backwards on some character development? yes. Does it take a few leaps with the plot that force you to suspend disbelief? yes. will it ever make up for the many seasons of Firefly that tragically never came to be? no.

you have to choose if you can live with it, so you can see at least a couple of the macro plots come to a satisfying resolution.

does the movie ruin the series for me? not at all. Only you can answer that question for yourself.
