Notch posts information about his new game: Mars Effect by Rekzaiin gaming

It's clear that this is a prank, but just by his descriptions there I really wish he was actually making it.

Increasing the occurence of sieges, or conflict in general? by troloxin dwarffortress

Perhaps you would be interested in a mod called Fortress Defense?

...thank you so much. I recently got very frustrated when I realized that I had crafted the perfect defense in a world entirely without goblins. This is exactly what I wished I had, at the time.

How else are you supposed to get rid of them?

To new people trying out the game for the first time... losing is fun! by ReverendVersein dwarffortress

There are few things better than finally getting that megaproject you've been thinking about all day to work. This feeling is closely rivaled by the enjoyment of doing damage control when it doesn't. Have fun!

Smokerelics: Nigh-impenetrable fortress. What's your physical defense like? by TMarkosin dwarffortress

[–]papercrane1001 0 points1 point ago

I used to like making enclosures out of the front entrance, into which I'd dump as much water as possible. I've recently refined that to first drop all siegers a few z-levels and then drown them, so that my front entrance could be opened back up while I'm waiting for it to drain.

Upright spikes at the bottom are a favorite, too :)

Science Geeks of Reddit, what's the most frustrating science misconception that you wish everyone knew? by mouthdrummerin AskReddit

[–]papercrane1001 0 points1 point ago

...actually, there are many different theories of gravity, each contradicting the next. There is a law of universal gravitation, stated by Newton, but there isn't just one accepted theory of gravity.

He mostly faced opposition because he insulted the pope in his book. The church's investigation at the time deemed the theory plausible, but as yet not fully supported by evidence, most notably the lack of an observed stellar parralax.

He also decided on "earth goes around the sun" primarily because it made the math easier.

I don't like Galileo.

How do YOU deal with vampires in your fortress? by VorpalSpongein dwarffortress

I tried this, but he refused to actually pull any of the levers when the time came, and I'm not sure why. It made that siege a bit awkward, though....

Animals have gone missing. by rbaragin dwarffortress

Check the inside of the cage. Since animals have to feed on grasses, they may just be starving to death where the dwarves can't actively see them.

You silly "casual" and "hardcore" gamers... why not try a real game? by chiabloin gaming

The wiki really helps to explain things at the beginning. I tried to start without it, and I got absolutely nowhere.

Depends, when did you mean? He started out in his room on the second floor, saw the thing coming up the stairs, and ran back to his room.

At the end when everyone ran out the creature had already disappeared, having claimed a victim already. The idea wasn't so much that it dragged her out of bed and chucked her down the stairs so much as that if it could get to you, then you were found dead at the bottom of the stairs. I figure that we would be remiss to restrict the spiritual world to the laws of causality when even the physical world doesn't always abide by them.

US; I've just been reading a lot of British authors lately. I didn't notice until after I was done, and then when I tried replacing the word it didn't quite read right.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

What movie did you like the first time you saw it, but hate after seeing it again? by irishamericanin AskReddit

[–]papercrane1001 0 points1 point ago

Personally I liked True Lies, but that may have been because my dad actually knew a lot about the FBI and CIA, so he would explain things to me and we would laugh at the things that were completely and ridiculously wrong.

Reddit, what was your worst job ever, and why? by percypiggle6in AskReddit

It may help that a lot of the ones you get at Philmont are fairly serious about Scouting just because of the effort required to make the trip, as compared to some of the summer camps where it seemed like a third of the kids were there because their parents didn't want them at home.

Thank you for working there; going to Philmont years ago is one of my greatest memories of the Boy Scouts.

Does it help to have others around to tell you they aren't real, or does it just not make a difference? For that matter, do they happen when other people are around?

I'm not actually sure; I haven't seen it. It's probably also worth mentioning that last time I checked, the air force was the branch that was actually most involved in the space program, so there's no telling what branch the real-life soldiers would be in.

...If you don't mind, I have a question I've been wondering about recently, but I don't have any biologist friends to ask. Do biologists currently think that the cell membrane came first, or the DNA segments came first? Last I heard the two theories had about equal merit.

If they work off of a navy ship, they're classified as marines. Thus, just about everyone in Halo, as they work off of Navy (space)ships, is a marine.
