Tech Tower, where's the T? by blasteyein gatech

[–]picto 1 point2 points ago

From what I heard, it was last stolen in the late 90s and GT threatened so hard to prosecute the people involved that it was never returned, and thus not stolen since. Correct me if I'm wrong but it's supposed to be stolen and then returned so all can celebrate the accomplishment.

I'd skip telling them to take it seriously and go right to GTFO.

Question about CS and CE degrees. by fansty909in gatech

[–]picto 6 points7 points ago

This 1000 times over. I always tell people my degree in CS is a degree on being able to figure things out for myself. And from my experience, it's an extremely good quality to have.

Sounds a lot like mine. He's probably my best pal on the planet. And you're right...he's incredibly sweet and gentle considering he's 80lbs. And one of the smartest dogs I've been around.

Funny enough I get that all the time. But he's actually a goldendoodle.

Thanks! When he was a puppy, he could fit through the door. But, once he got too big for it, apparently he figured out he could stick his whole head through it instead.

Need to learn basic MySQL in 10 hours. Well, almost. Help? by A-Typein mysql

[–]picto 1 point2 points ago

you'll be fine, but pro tip...I think its better to say "I haven't had much opportunity to use this but its something that I would like to explore further" than "I haven't used it much, but I studied up on it because I saw you were looking for it"

[–]picto 0 points1 point ago

Most of the time basic SQL means "can you write a quick query to check something". If you're more a dev person, you should be fine. I know I tend to look for more strong fundamentals than anything else. And by brush up I really mean glaze over. You can't learn it all. Just Google those acronyms, see what they mean, and move on.

Just by looking at that description, I would probably expect you would be more heavily tested in development concepts than anything else.

Stay focused on what you know. don't try to become a database expert...trust me, we can tell if someone just read a textbook or sounds like it. I prefer if people say "well I don't have a ton of exposure to X, but from what I understand is..." rather than try to recite from memory. Remember, any job you aren't gonna know everything you need to right off the bat. Everybody has to start somewhere.

I interview people and part of my responsibilities is checking database knowledge. Here are a few things you will want to be familiar with and glaze over (at least from the questions I ask).

Know what an ER diagram is. Not necessarily in huge detail, but know what they are for and how to use them. If you know UML, it's a breeze.

Know the difference between DML and DDL. Big plus if you know what it means in terms of using transactions.

Be able to explain what a JOIN is and the different flavors there are...left, inner, etc.

Know what an index is. Big plus is you can explain what a BTREE and B+TREE is.

Since it's MySQL, I would brush up on differences in storage engines...mainly MYISAM vs InnoDB

Like I said...these are just a couple of questions I usually ask. I've never asked anyone explicit SQL questions...I know some people ask to put together simple queries.

Good luck!

Some people shouldn't be released from jail. by jer3myin Atlanta

I was thinking the same thing. On the video, they said the mother was "nearby shopping for strawberries". That little girl was in the toy section. On what planet is the toy section in a walmart even remotely close to strawberries?

How much do redditors make? by TibiaFibulaJNXin AskReddit

[–]picto 0 points1 point ago

I was really saying that in jest, not intentionally rude or anything. But I think you're right...people get weird with money topics, so it ends up being all kinds of taboo. Some people just aren't comfortable talking about it...I guess they think people will judge them if they make more than someone else. I dunno.

But in all seriousness, I'm sorta surprised with that masters that you don't make well more than what you said.

problems calling up data from a file by ganymedesearatin PHPhelp

[–]picto 0 points1 point ago

Since that's the case, I would chdir() within the script. Or at the very least, run the script from within the same directory. If you use chdir(), it will change the current php directory to the one you specify. Documentation for chdir()

[–]picto 0 points1 point ago*

Ok, great. Now, where...absolute path...is the inv.txt file located? Is it in I:\comp120\files\Code directory? You might need to chdir() to the path of both inv.txt and report.txt. Like this:

chdir('I:\\comp120\\files\\Code');
fopen(...);

EDIT: I should also mention that the script will be looking for those files in the directory you're in when you run it. so if you're in x:\mydir when you run php -n i:\path\to\script.php, it's looking in x:\mydir
