This guys weld test coupon made the entire shop laugh... Poor bastard. by pyr0ganin Welding

Watching that made me want to reach through the Internet just to smack the guy. That has to be a joke. But worse, it's a YouTube video with some views - so technically he's spreading misinformation and really bad safety advice. Ouch.

But yea, I'd say his "bridge" is gonna hold ಠ_ಠ

Even welders aren't as dumb as welders.

It can be challenging to learn the correct terminology for everything in the world of fabrication - but from the lowliest hand tool to the mightiest of automatons every part has a name by which anyone can know it.

Kind of like in the animal kingdom, but with metal. Or wood. Or plastic. If it can be cut, formed and rejoined, it needs welding! Carpentry is just welding for people who can't take the heat ;)

A glorified steel shock absorber and general protective enclosure, I believe.

I would, yes. You can't do spray transfer at 130 amps, so it's beneficial to have options :)

I use 75/25 because I have to. The boss orders the consumables.

There are lots of gas mixtures out there, but Ar/CO2 is the most common - unless you're welding something that absolutely needs the extra penetration of straight CO2.

Fucking Canadian welders and their hoity-toity ideas...

But no, really, you had me thinking you'd made that sub just so people could post for help. That was 98% of my rage.

Ar/CO2 sucks sometimes because it cools off the puddle (especially relevant when using any wire with silicon added) but it does reduce spatter.

First time SMAW, using 1/8th fleet 37 on scrap metal. Really enjoying it. Tips appreciated. by tsoholesin Welding

6013 is a decent rod to learn with because it carries a stable arc. Try 10 to 15 degrees forehand inclination with a slight whipping action (or try circles, it's up to you).

When using 60XX rod, always wirebrush the work first, to remove contaminants and improve penetration.

To maximize the use of material and increase your puddle recognition, try to slightly overlap your beads. This will help you to stay consistent. Don't forget to remove slag and wirebrush between passes!

however, the English language is a particularly fluid one, with definitions changing all the time.

While this may be true for some words, given enough time for society to change to the point that new definitions are (possibly) required - there are some words that due to their nature are not going to be redefined. My personal issue with this particular word under these circumstances is that it gives the wrong impression for what you are trying to accomplish. FWIW, the *porn subs are for showing off striking examples of a particular thing - not newbies seeking advice. Maybe that's just me. Maybe everyone else is thinking "welding porn?! Fuck yeah, FULL PENETRATION! Do it up!". Something tells me that just isn't the case.

do appreciate where you're coming from, can you suggest something more appropriate from your perspective.

I still don't feel a separate place for just pictures or even advice is warranted. Were such a thing necessary, /r/weldhelp or /r/weldadvice would be plenty descriptive without pandering to the hiveminds penchant for porn-as-suffix.

Besides, there's /r/askatradesperson if anyone really feels the need for advice from verified professionals, amirite? ;)

Seriously, welding porn? I'm sorry man, but that particular trend is highly irritating to me. Pornography is a word with a particular definition which in no way, shape or form applies to welding. It has been misappropriated by the Internet and reddit especially to apply to anything from food to bicycles, but I personally wish nothing to do with the vapid interpretation of porn as a suffix meaning 'pleasing to look at'. Besides, tradespeople already catch enough flak for being sexist.

While I appreciate what you are trying to accomplish, I don't think your chosen implementation is appropriate in this situation.

That said, if anyone does feel intimidated rather than inspired by what they see here, I can only express puzzlement, bordering on alarm.

Solid. Looks a little bumpy for FC, but that could be the blur. I love multipass wire - after a couple of minutes you can feel the heat radiating off your work and in the winter you can put your gauntlets next to the piece at coffee time and come back to warm mittens.
