bench probobly had a comparable shooting percentage

28% on 2-7 vs. 55% on 18-33. I guess 28% is comparable to 55%; I mean, you can compare the two numbers.

more consistent

Have you been watching the Pacers series? I guess you're technically right; the Heat's role players have been more consistent than the Lakers', but only if you mean more consistently nonexistent (which is pretty amazing).

Aside: Honestly, if the Heat drop the series to the Pacers, the story of these playoffs is going to have been that team ball beats heroball every time; first iso Melo loses to team ball Heat, then iso Kobe loses to team ball Thunder, and now, with Bosh out and with Wade a question mark every night, iso Lebron James, the best basketball player in the world and the only player who can do anything that could come close to being described as "beating an NBA playoff team singlehandedly", may lose to a team ball Pacers that on paper should be the far worse team. The Spurs, meanwhile, the team basketball club par excellence, are just flat out steamrolling and could conceivably go 16-0. That is the theme of these playoffs.

He might not exactly be joking (more like venting), but he isn't serious. Even the most cynical "Win Lakers Win" point of view fan doesn't want the 41 or so games that MWP would get suspended next season for attacking a ref.

Come on, man. Don't play the "how dare you, you sleazy Lakers fan" card when you know perfectly well that nobody this side of the ESPN forums seriously wants to see Ron Artest attack an official.

10b-5 obviously doesn't really know classic NBA that well. Bird and Magic were not more complete players than Michael Jordan by any stretch of the imagination; they were scorers. It's widely known that Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were so-so defenders. There's an Inside the NBA panel floating around where they discuss the "best of all time" question; everybody says immediately (and this is a panel of Hall of Famers) that MJ was the best defender of the three without question.

Do you think basketball will one day be the biggest professional sport in the world? We keep hearing about all the growth in China...etc. by gayunicornrainbowsin nba

[–]robertodeltoro 9 points10 points ago

No. The perception (and, come on, the accurate perception) that basketball is a tall man's game will always prevent it from being the bona fide most popular sport on earth. To a lot of people (too many for basketball to ever be top dog), it inherently cheapens the sport; you can never quite shake the feeling that having the game (at the highest level) depend so much on height somehow goes against the spirit of sports. I'm not saying I feel that way (I love basketball), but people feel that way, and I don't think there's any getting around that for the foreseeable future.

I know all of you saw it. What do you guys think about the KG call? by DammitChrisin nba

[–]robertodeltoro 2 points3 points ago

No no, it's the opposite here. The "Don't change the game with a whistle" camp in this situation is the "let them play it out down the stretch" camp; the class of people who think the game should be called by the book (or at least internally consistently) throughout the first 46 minutes, but think that the refs should bite the whistle on close calls in the final 2 (at least, that's what DammitChrist is saying).

The actual situation is this: "Don't change the game with a whistle" is compatible both with changing the way you whistle in the final seconds and not changing the way you whistle in the final seconds: If you were calling it fast and loose the first 46 minutes, continue letting stuff go in the final two minutes and you won't affect the game with a whistle; if you were calling it tight and by the book in the first 46 minutes, ease up on the close calls in the final two minutes so you won't affect the game with a whistle. A person who doesn't want the game changed with a whistle can actually argue either position and still remain internally consistent.

How the hell do you even have a sex tape scandal in 1988, Rob Lowe? I mean, does that go down like "Hey man, if you go over to Jim's Seedy Porn Shop on Darnell Street you can pick up a tape of the dude that played Billy in St. Elmo's Fire totally boning some chick. Todd says he thinks she looks underage."

police seized Anderson's computer in a child pornography investigation

I'm sorry, what part of that statement is a fair portrayal of the situation, if what his lawyer says is accurate?

Let's assume (giving him the benefit of the doubt) that what his lawyer says is accurate:

  • Are the photos "scantily clad" or "nude"?

Assuming, as his lawyer says, that they were "scantily clad", and not nude, then in no way does this situation involve child pornography. AND, even if they were nude it's still a deceptive portrayal of the situation to call it a child porn situation, as that obviously doesn't tell the whole story.

  • Did he sleep with (or is he suspected of sleeping with) an underage girl?

Then we're talking about a statutory rape situation, not a child pornography situation.

I'm sorry, but based on his lawyer's description of the situation, any media outlet that reported the situation using the phrase "child pornography" has obviously misrepresented the situation. What else could they possibly have done? They could have not done that.

Can't find any info about Colorado, but I did find this law blog post which says that, absurdly, a statutory rape is still considered statutory rape in Rhode Island even if the "victim" provides a fake I.D. showing them to be above the age of consent.

Well, that makes things sound a whole hell of a lot better.

who represented herself as 21 years of age, flew to Colorado, showing her required identification.

So if he actually carded a girl, she showed a fake I.D., he slept with her, and she later turned out to be underage, does anybody know if he's still on the hook? Because if that's the case, that seems like you're just begging for extortion cases.

Things that are infinite still have differentiable points. The countably infinite set of integers contains points differentiable from one another at one, two, etc., and the uncountably infinite set of reals also contains all such points.

An eternity of time without distinguishable points (sequences of events or states of affairs; Event A -> Event B -> Event C) is no eternity of time at all, it's just a single thing that sits there frozen.

there are differences between regulated by a doctor prescription drug usage and self-medication with illegal drugs

Right, but notice that I'm going a step further than that; even if we take the strong version of Psoulocybe's thesis, he's still (at least partly) correct. That is, even if we're taking him to mean that on-label, doctor monitored use of prescription drugs can be as debilitating as recreational use of illicit drugs, there is mounting evidence in several cases that his point is correct (cases: long-term cognitive problems and side effects ["brain zaps," etc.] associated with MAOI usage, long-term memory and cognitive problems pursuant to benzodiazepine usage, long-term memory problems related to certain sleep medications), at least to a certain extent. Now, are these problems as severe as the problems associated with heroin addiction (i.e. death)? No. Do they nevertheless exist? Yes, and they can in fact be quite severe; antidepressant discontinuation in particular has been linked to side effects so bad as to drive patients to suicide. Thus, even if we take his (somewhat poorly worded and not argued) statement at its strongest possible face value, he has a point.
