Obama's reaction to The Avengers (Spoilers) by dzodzoin movies

[–]rogersmith25 1 point2 points ago

Or perhaps a red herring? It wouldn't have been a surprise if every actor (including Cobie Smulders) was signed on for future films, while the name "Coulson" was conspicuously absent...

Personally, I was holding out hope that it would be Smulders' character and not Coulson who would be "the guy they kill to prove the bad guys are serious."

I feel like most people hated Shutter Island because they could predict the ending, but I embraced it and found I really enjoyed the "journey" to get there.

I thought Ruffalo's performance was great and nuanced and that a second viewing revealed little details I missed the first time around. That movie really changed my opinion about him.

A great theory on Coulson (spoilers) by thisisnotbrucein Avengers

[–]rogersmith25 2 points3 points ago

Everyone knew that the bad guys were going to have to kill off at least one character that didn't have his/her own movie franchise. It seemed like Coulson was the inevitable choice until they added the Cobie Smulders character.

I'm with you - I've loved Coulson since Iron Man and I really hope that he's still going to be around, but it seems like they tried to balance the extremely lopsided sex ratio by replacing Coulson with a reasonable female facsimile.

I'm still holding out hope...

Question about Thor and Loki. by clruskinin Avengers

[–]rogersmith25 15 points16 points ago

Just a clarification: in the films, isn't the explanation that Thor is a super-advanced alien who was worshipped as a God by Norse humans?

What I mean is that he is the "God" from mythology, but isn't actually a "God" in the Judeo/Christian/Islam "religious" sense...

I am a transgendered man, how can I be a part of the men's right movement? Does men rights exclude transrights? by littlemusein MensRights

[–]rogersmith25 49 points50 points ago

I would go a step further and say that you are a valuable member of the cause as you are someone who has seen both sides of the coin, so to speak.

The old adage is that those who are privileged are so used to their advantages that they are blind to them. Feminists throw this claim at the men's rights movement -- MRAs counter with "right back at you!"

I'd be interested to hear your perspective as someone who has experienced life from both sides.

I think it's ludicrous to suggest that both women and men don't face some form of prejudice based on their gender. I think most men here recognize that there are still some negative stereotypes that women face; conversely, I've heard many women openly express the idea that it is impossible for men as a group to face discrimination - this was said without reprisal.

OP, what do you think?

DAE fight in your dreams but never seems to hurt the other guy by hckyplyr606in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]rogersmith25 1 point2 points ago

There are lots of clues that tell you that you're sleeping. Obvious clues would be things like the presence of dead relatives or other impossible situations. Others are subtle: pick up a piece of paper, read it, look away and read it again; if you are dreaming, the same idea will be on the page, but it will be worded differently. This technique is called "dream checking" and I've read that it's recommended that (assuming your interested in lucid dreaming) you should do this periodically every day even if you are sure you aren't dreaming. Getting in the habit of dream checking increases the likelihood that you will do it in a dream and realize you're dreaming.

After you're sure you're dreaming, the technique is rather simple - don't think about the action, think about the sensation. For example, don't just try to push the bully, because it won't have any effect. First grab his shirt and take the time to notice how that feels - feel the material and feel his weight. Then, once you have established a tactile link between you and the bully, then shove back. I always find that it is these tactile sensations that link me to the dream world.

I've also read that, if you start to "lose your dream" - that things are becoming hazy and you are starting to wake up - that you should rub your hands together and focus your mind on that sensation. I've found that this only half-works. While it does prevent me from waking up, the dream will often leap wildly to a completely different location populated by totally different people.

All of this takes practice, but it's worth it in the end... if only to abort really nasty nightmares.

But teaching yourself to recognize terrible anxiety-driven nightmares and then turn that hour into a paradise of tranquil rest that you control is more than worth the time and effort necessary.

[–]rogersmith25 1 point2 points ago

There is a really easy way to overcome this: focus on the sensation of the punch landing, not on throwing the punch. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but this strategy has lead to some pretty cool lucid dreaming.

For example, if you try to crawl on a wall like spiderman, you'll just slide down; but if you imagine that "down" is suddenly the direction of the wall, and everyone else is sideways, you'll stick no problem. Same works for super-strength - don't imagine that you are strong, focus on the fact that the heavy object "feels" light.

When I made this transition, I went from that hopeless feeling of being in a fight with completely ineffective punches, to becoming a one man death-punch machine. Throw a punch and then think about how a really heavy punch feels when it lands. Think about the sensation in your knuckles at impact and the recoil through your shoulder. If you want, you can even think about how devastated a person would be if they were actually hit by your death punch.

Does Moral Alignment damage the overall roleplay experience? by greaverfoxin truegaming

[–]rogersmith25 0 points1 point ago

The reward doesn't necessarily have to be an item: what if the choice was between a (beloved) companion and alignment. Even Luke Skywalker abandons his training to try to save his friends.

If you were Luke wouldn't you betray your Jedi training to save Han, Leia, 3PO, R2D2 and Chewie? If Empire was a game, there could be an alternative path where a stoic, disciplined Luke remains on Dagobah, completes his training, and successfully faces Vader... then quietly mourns the deaths of his friends.

You are right about the present state of gaming - no one ever really feels tempted; but that's because we aren't trying hard enough. What if you have to choose between saving your squadmate and 10 NPC children who can offer the war effort absolutely nothing. 1 innocent child? Dark side temptations are harder because dark jedi are rather opportunistic already. Perhaps an example would be between killing a subordinate who failed you or letting him live and continue serving. If you murder everyone who makes a mistake, you will have few skilled crew remaining; however, by not killing them you are not giving in to your emotions and furthermore appear weak in the eyes of your master...

Does Moral Alignment damage the overall roleplay experience? by greaverfoxin truegaming

[–]rogersmith25 5 points6 points ago

Morality systems exist to reward consistent roleplaying, but you rarely see them implemented properly.

Let's use the Star Wars universe as an example: Star Wars has a built in reward system for being very "good" or very "bad". The more you stay aligned to your particular side of the force, the more power you achieve. So if you constantly give in to your emotions, you become in tune with the dark side and become more powerful; conversely, if you remain disciplined and disinterested, you become more powerful in the light side.

The negative side of this is that, once you have chosen a side, all your decisions are made for you: you always choose the option that matches your alignment (otherwise you will give up valuable powers).

The problem is that you are never tempted by the other side. There is almost never a reward so tempting that you would consider forsaking your alignment in order to get the reward. Usually the light side choice is always best; the temptations for the dark side are pathetic little bonuses like demanding more money as a reward and getting an extra 500 credits. A real temptation would be the choice between saving the life of a useless stranger and acquiring the most powerful, badass lightsabre in the whole game. The player needs to weigh their beliefs against a temptation that is clearly superior; if a temptation is not obviously a better choice, then it isn't a temptation.

A character who has compromised their principles to gain short term advantages will obviously never attain the highest levels of their discipline - but that same character would have incurred many advantages from being an opportunist who always takes the "best choice". Thus we have 3 states - moral, immoral and amoral. Both moral and immoral characters must invest in their alignment and should be rewarded for their consistency. Amoral characters are always rewarded immediately by their decisions, so they do not gain long-term alignment rewards.

Of course, there is a balance that can be struck - a moral jedi might be tempted once or twice. A moral jedi might give in to anger to gain the strength in order to save the life of an ally. The jedi is rewarded by retaining a party member and friend, but may never achieve the pinnacle of light side powers because he is willing to break from his alignment if the cost is high enough.

It's like the old joke about the beautiful model and the billionaire:

Billionaire: Madame, would you sleep with me for a hundred million dollars?

Model: Yes.

Billionaire: Then would you sleep with me for ten dollars?

Model: What sort of harlot do you think I am?

Billionaire: Madame, we have already established that - now we are simply negotiating a price...

TL;DR - Morality systems fail because they do not provide sufficient temptation to sway players away from their principles.

What's your opinion on handheld gaming in general? by Angbandin truegaming

[–]rogersmith25 2 points3 points ago

I love handheld gaming but presently I'm torn about the marketplace.

Generally, I hate action gaming on iOS devices. Virtual buttons are the worst. Yet I find myself buying games on my iPhone instead of my 3DS just because they're so goddamn cheap.

If Marvel vs Capcom 2 came out on 3DS, it would cost at least $30 - on iOS it cost $3! Fighting games suck on iOS, but I still just said, "$3? I'm buying this..."

Nintendo needs to get their shit together and start pricing their products competitively before Apple releases a goddamn controller - once that happens, it will be too late.

3ds vs DSi by avian304in nintendo

[–]rogersmith25 0 points1 point ago

I have a 3DS and haven't really had a problem with battery life. If you leave the WiFi off when you aren't using it, then the battery doesn't seem to drain much when the system is closed.

Just leave the charging dock on your bedside table and put the system there overnight.

I think you'd be crazy to get a DSi over a 3DS for the same price...

It's "probably" not "probly"! What mispronunciations bother you? by BigLongBlackSockin AskReddit

[–]rogersmith25 0 points1 point ago

Advertisement was originally "ad VER tiss ment" but it was changed because people thought it made more sense to just say "advertise" and then say "ment".

It's similar to how Americans decided that the letter "Z" should sound like "zee" so that it rhymed in the alphabet song.

Advertise-ment is now the dominant pronunciation but it still sounds wrong to me; when everyone decides to make the same mistake, it becomes correct. Unlike Science, in language the truth is a democracy.

Ricky Gervais tells the story of explaining the big bang and evolution to Karl "Idiot Abroad" Pilkington and Karl has brings up some great questions by sherlockazuluin videos

[–]rogersmith25 1 point2 points ago

The whole "Pilkington is an idiot" schtick bothers me when it enters the scientific world. The problem is that, because Ricky Gervais is an outspoken atheist, his comments about science are often trusted.

But Gervais is frequently wrong when Pilkington pushes him for explanations of scientific concepts like Evolution. Gervais then goes on to mock and laugh at Pilkington, despite having provided an inadequate and incorrect explanation.

Whenever I hear them discuss science it makes me cringe because it feels like I'm watching a grade 3 student making fun of a grade 1 student for not knowing how to read, despite the fact that the grade 3 student is still incorrectly sounding-out his words.
