Now the trend of people just making images out of these boring stories so they can squeeze meaningless internet points out of it makes me weep a single tear like an indian looking at a garbage dump.

The collective mind, as you put it, shifts very quickly away from an effective self-sustaining system that polices its own content to a circlejerking free for all of people who don't know what good content is.

It'd be like if there was no barrier to immigration for a country and as soon as you got off the boat you could vote for president, and a bunch of chinese people came over and voted mao in as the president while the original residents were like "Hey like stop that. This isn't china, keep your chinese policies in china please- or go back to china if you want to live in china". China in this case is mostly digg.
