Is anyone really going to use those tiny shovels? Looks like a waste of resources. I'm REALLY down on cheap tools and have vowed to never again by a cheap piece of crap, even if it's half the price of a the decent tool. It saves money in the long run and you have a quality item to use the entire time instead of having to return some broke piece of crap over and over. buy quality tools.

A question about horticultural vinegar. by tittyjackin gardening

[–]stalk_of_fennel 0 points1 point ago

I've used horticultural vinegar. If it's the 20% stuff... watch out :) A fine mist of it in the air makes it very hard to breath. I mixed it with some soap and oil to make it stick to what I was spraying it on. I was using it on poison ivy... it killed just about everything I sprayed it on ... exact the poison ivy. Sure it gnarled the poison ivy leaves up pretty well but being that it's a perennial it's got a pretty extensive root system and just fights back by putting on new growth. If I was consistent and went after it over and over I'm sure I would win..,.. I'm a bit scatterbrained though. I'm pretty sure it would destroy most annuals pretty quickly. But be careful not to get it on your skin or eyes and again when you're spraying it it gets hard to breath. Oh, no you don't dilute it.

You'll find a lot better info googling "spray horticultural vinegar weeds" and coming here and asking more specific questions I think.

I don't know my pest insects that well but I'm pretty familiar with the beneficials and this guy doesn't look like one. leafhopper sounds about right to me and they're bad. like you already found out, they're known for transmitting viruses and other diseases.

Help IDing this caterpillar/worm by Naepain gardening

[–]stalk_of_fennel 4 points5 points ago

It's a variety of armyworm or cutworm. The exact species doesn't matter to much unless you're just really interested. Some of them prefer certain plants over others. Some of them will eat your plants starting at dusk but for the most part they do the same shit.. eat your garden at night while you're asleep. I either pick them off by hand at night with a flashlight (you see all sorts of interesting bugs at night!) or spray plants with BT (bacillus thuringiensis a biological caterpiller-icide). During the day you should be able to find them napping near the base of your plant somewhere tucked under some mulch.... nice time to kill them as well.

If I had to guess I'd say it was a yellow-striped armyworm.

look around here if you're interested http://bugguide.net/node/view/6018

If you figure out exactly what it is I'd love to know.

Great inexpensive tool that tells you exactly when to water. by stalk_of_fennelin gardening

[–]stalk_of_fennel[S] 0 points1 point ago

Well if you can look at the top of the soil and gauge if it's still moist a few inches down then by all means water based on the dryness of the top ;) I can't manage to make that work out for me.

The reason you don't want your soil water logged is it creates an anaerobic environement. This starves the soil microbes of oxygen, even more it rots your roots fine hairs. The fine root hairs are what do all the real work of extracting nutrients from the soil. Once those fine hairs are rotted you can have water soaked soil yet your plants will die of dehydration because they no longer have a way of taking up water. Soil microbes + oxygen are what feed your plant. If you're going the all chemical route and don't care about soil microbes then you still need to worry about rotting your roots.

yup and even more-so try not to splash the leaves with water that hits the ground. this is what spreads a lot of the nasties like wil

A healthy plant should shrug that off pretty quick. Heck, the reason bonsai's are able to live for hundreds of years is because someone keeps chopping it's roots off!

I think you're right that watering in the morning is the best in most cases. If you're not splashing the leaves then you're ok though. It's better to give thirsty plants a drink if they really need it then to wait.

fair enough enough criticism. since people like an assortment of tools. I present the shallow rooted plant hydration probe. Also very inexpensive and comes conveniently attached to the full sized hydration probe!

They killed a newly planted apple tree. by Drumlinin whatsthisbug

[–]stalk_of_fennel 3 points4 points ago

Welcome to Texas :)

Question? How do you know the tree is dead. How long before the death of the tree was that picture taken. How long did the tree have those jacked up looking leaves?

If it did really die in one day the only thing I can think of is fire blight. https://www.google.com/search?sugexp=chrome,mod%3D14&q=fire+blight+apple+trees&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&authuser=0&ei=v9-3T9TpFK_fsQKp8ZyLDA&biw=1280&bih=685&sei=w9-3T977HuzEsQK9gJmLDA

Fireblight likes warm wet weather. I'm guessing y'all had a really mild winter like the rest of the country? While googling 'illinois fireblight" I saw one link that said in 2009 Illinois was suffering an almost epidemic outbreak of fireblight. Another link from 2011 said It's back... Fireblight

I really don't think the fly killed your apple tree. But, many flies are predators and hunt tiny insects like mites and thrips. I'd think that other insects killed your tree.
