Hmm, good point on the distance, I just chose an arbitrary number. So if we shortened the distance down to 50-100 light years say, would we notice us? The discussion I was having over breakfast brought up the fact that we have detonated a few thousand nuclear bombs over the last few years. A point was made that this activity could probably be an exclamation point for anyone watching earth for signs of life. I was just wondering if it is, or if we have done anything else thats screams life.

My score seemed pretty low too. I guess its okay if its a worse case scenario, but i wonder what causes such a large difference.

I haven't really converted the points to miles yet, nor have I used a miles program in the past so I can't say with any certainty. Here is a link to Marriott's point-mile conversion table, you would probably have to contact the airline to see exactly how the miles work.

credit card rewards by find_a_causein personalfinance

[–]upnflames 2 points3 points ago

I love my Marriott Rewards card. I stay in hotels a lot for work, and can't cook so my points rack up. I've saved up about a 100k in the last year, which is enough for four or five nights in most Marriott resorts. Plus they give me free upgrades and free nights all the time. I've had the card a little over a year now, and gotten 6-7 free night certificates, plus an upgrade I'd say 60% percent of the time I book a standard room. There is no better feeling then checking into a standard room on a work night, and being bumped up to a luxury suite. Spending a rondom tuesday night a hottub is fantastic. Definitely worth the 65 bucks a year.

Try to get a card that maximizes your biggest spending category. I travel a bunch for work, and have an absolute inability to cook. That being said, I tend to stay in a lot of hotels and eat out a lot. My Marriott card gives me 5 Marriott Points for each dollar spent there, plus two points for airfare, rental cars and dining. Combine that with all the points I get from actually staying in a hotel, and I racked up 100k points last year. I'm good for free five free nights in costa rica. I'm pretty stoked since I've never been on an overseas vacation before. Now to actually find the time to go...

WTF PETA! (fixed) by Losendos1976in WTF

[–]upnflames -1 points0 points ago

Having worked with rats in a lab, I can promise you this does not happen. Every researcher I have worked with maintains a considerable level of respect for research rats and treats them better then any pet store would. We would actually sneak the control rats out of the lab after experiments and foster them out on craigslist. Can't guarantee it was for the better, but at least they had a shot.

how do store cards affect your credit? by IForOneDisagreein personalfinance

[–]upnflames 0 points1 point ago

I would be interested in an answer to this question as well.

To the bonus, I make a bit less then you; my chase visa gives 7500, and my discover gives me 15000. I've been babying my credit since I was 18 though, so I have about six years of history with discover, four with chase. Only about 4k left on student debt, and a closed car loan. Not sure if it helps, but I would think you should qualify for more.

Time to actually do something FOR SCIENCE: I'm a science teacher at a low-income rural middle school. We were just given 5,500 dollars to make a science lab. What do I get? by mdrabzin AskReddit

You can do quite a bit with a few sets of pipettes and a small centrifuge. Basically any experiments you want to run up to 400 level Cell and Molec, but I would imagine you'd want to start simpler with 7th and 8th graders. Electrophoresis is cool, but the practical concepts behind it are probably a little beyond middle schoolers. If you wanted too though, you would need pipettes and a centrifuge anyway. Regardless, these are the two instruments they wil use the most should they actually pursue science, so it would probably be beneficial to have early exposure to them. As for experiments, I always thought bacteria cultures were kind of fun when I was in high school. You can grow bacteria that glows in a black light. Kids love things that glow. Plus if you have a basic microscope you can actually count colonies, and run a full ap level lab experiment. If you don't have a microscope, you can use this TvEyeclops thing.

http://www.amazon.com/EyeClops-Bionic-Eye-Multizoom-Green/dp/B000PGRBGA

My brother has one. Not as clear as a regular microscope, but it's suits the purpose and allows you to the show the image on a TV Screen. You can probably use it to look at a bunch of things in your curriculum. from onion cells to salt grains. Ultimately, even if you did the experiment as a class exercise, it would be pretty good experiance into what real science is like in college and the work place. You can buy everything I listed here, plus the first round of reagents and consumables for some experiments for about three grand. Leaves you some money for hot/stir plates, beakers, and basics.

And I just realized my undergraduate bio lab at a 30k/yr college was funded on less then 5 grand...

My company is telling me to pay them back for rewards I received from my credit card company from company expenses. by [deleted]in AskReddit

You absolutely do not have to pay it back. Your personal credit card records are confidential, and the company has no right to even ask if you have a reward program. If I were you I would just about face, and be like "Oh did I say that. I'm pretty sure I was just making shit up." They have no way to prove if you did or didn't get a gift card, and really can't do anything about it. Tell them if they are really concerned about it, they need to work a little harder on getting you a company credit card.

I've known about this for some time now, and try to avoid chain restaurants whenever I can.

Want another kick in the nuts...

My ex used to work at Macaroni Grill, a Brinker Restaurant. Maggiano's, which is supposed to be "upscale" italian dining used the same exact bagged food that went to Macaroni Grill. Dinner at Maggiano's is twice as much, and the only difference is that you get a real tablecloth and the server's wear penguin outfits.

Try going through the following list in order to determine if your son is truly psychopathic. Rank him honestly, and see where he scores.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hare_Psychopathy_Checklist

If he ranks high (which it sounds like he might) keep in mind that many psychopaths lead relatively normal lives, so you do not have to completely give up on him. Your best bet may be to send him to a detention center for now. It sounds like he has a lot of violent tendencies, and you do not want to jeopardize your families safety, or the safety of his peers. While he will probably have problems for a very long time, perhaps he will out grow the violent nature. Otherwise, he may be spending some time in jail regardless.
