The question was, What would you have told YOUR 18-year-old self about finance? I was not capable at 18 of making smart decisions with credit cards and ruined my credit. What I was trying to convey is that you don't need to get credit cards right away. I would encourage diligent saving and learning to live below your means at 18 over building credit with accounts. In a country drowning in debt, that doesn't seem like unreasonable advice.

1) You do not need a credit card. Trust me.

2) You do not need car payments, either. Buy something outright.

3) Do not accept personal loans from family members.

4) Save money now, even if it seems too minute to amount to much. Put it into an account that you can't transfer back to your checking.

5) Do not touch your retirement, no matter how dire the perceived need, or how young you are, thinking you can rebuild later.
