The Emergence of the Fix-It Society--I would love to see this catch on by minerva_qwin Frugal

[–]weegee 0 points1 point ago

Years ago I bought a toaster. A $60 Kitchen Aid, bought at Target. My previous toaster had worked perfectly for 8 years, and it wasn't available anymore so I bought this one. Thought I was doing the right thing buying a good quality toaster that would hopefully last another 8 years. 13 months after I bought it, it failed. Took it to a small appliance repair place where the guy explained to me that it was built so as to not be repaired. Once it failed, it was junk. Indeed, there was no way to disassemble it at all, and no parts were available. He happily pointed out to me, a $225 toaster that was built so it could be repaired, but I didn't think spending that kind of money on a toaster made sense (I've since learned about the Sunbeam toasters that work almost forever, and can be found at garage sales for $5-10).

So I bought a $25 Toastmaster at Target and it's worked now for almost 7 years. Cool. Will replace it with the vintage Sunbeam (after I clean all the dead bugs and dust out of it from long term storage) when it breaks.

I love being able to repair stuff. I'm in IT and we repair computers all the time. Swap out parts, sometimes even solder on a new component if it means saving a few hundred bucks from having to buy a new board for the server.

This disposable society we live in is pretty sad. I feel terrible throwing so much stuff into a landfill that should be repairable.

keep it and do what with it...look at it? I'd rather have the money now and put it somewhere where it's needed.

Get ready to have fun. You're going to have the time of your life living in Japan.

I would open a local bank account. You will need it for paycheck deposits, etc. Though most transactions are still done by cash, having a bank account will be handy. You may need a hanko to open an account though, look in to that.

AMD Backing Out of CPU Speed Wars Against Intel by anthonysjbin hardware

[–]weegee -2 points-1 points ago

really sad. I love AMD. Despite Intel producing faster processors, the bang for buck value of AMD is really there. At least it is now, hope they don't fail. The last thing we need is for Intel to be the only desktop CPU manufacturer with no real competition. I bought my 6 core AMD black edition (1090T) for $159 which I feel is a real bargain. And I absolutely hate Intel proc design, with the pins in the mount, not the chip. AMD with its more traditional design, to me, is much superior, more user friendly, and easier to deal with.

they may have to make minor modifications to the design. a good engineer could do that. "never say never" - AWD is inherently superior to rear wheel drive in my opinion, and safer too.

yeah it helps to have a decent bicycle lane, or better yet, a dedicated bike path. I don't care much for riding in traffic either. But the more of us who decide to do it, the better. We stay in shape, save money, less cars on the road, less pollution, etc. I have a high amount of respect for cyclists, and strongly support the development of dedicated bike lanes.

There is no reason why Subaru can't offer an AWD edition of the BRZ. They may not do it this year, or next, but in a few years I bet they do. AWD has come to define Subaru and has distinguished it from the rest of the pack of Japanese cars.

well I and many others are hoping for AWD. I won't buy a rear wheel drive car, too dangerous in rain and snow. If I lived in California or Arizona, sure, but not here in Western Washington. As I write this, it is absolutely pouring outside.

How reliable are Subaru's? by justwantanswersin subaru

[–]weegee -1 points0 points ago

WRX. Mazda doesn't have AWD, a major safety feature in rain and snow. Honda is, well, pretty boring compared to the other two.
