If you go back in to Time? by dont_care_mein AskReddit

[–]woofwoofwoof -1 points0 points ago

If I went back in time, I would prevent myself from entering and using the time machine, thereby creating a causal violation and disproving the possibility of time travel into the past.

Does anyone have a strong argument supporting child labor in China? by Hds3555in AskReddit

[–]woofwoofwoof 1 point2 points ago

Seeing how a child labor situation already exists in China, shouldn't it be the OP justifying his opposition rather than other people justifying their support.

Jackie Chan retiring from action movies; says he's tired and the world is too violent by Slappy_MC_Garglenutzin worldnews

[–]woofwoofwoof 27 points28 points ago

This is actually one of the most peaceful times in human history, in terms of the rarity of major wars, casualties within war, violent crime and homicide rate.

Specifically, the homicide rate in the US is much lower today than it was in the 1980s, when Chan was beginning his career.

To put it another way, with each violent film Chan made, the world trended towards a better place.

WikiLeaks may have been responsible for exposing Majid Jamali Fashi, who was hanged in Tehran on Tuesday morning after “confessing” to assassinating a nuclear scientist on behalf of Israel by StinkYourTrollopin worldnews

[–]woofwoofwoof -3 points-2 points ago

So it would appear that Wikileaks, in dumping a massive amount of documents with little or no discretion, has allowed the Iranian government to target and execute someone. The facts are all there, and the evidence seems pretty damning, in spite of Wikileaks craptasticaly unprofessional and hollow response.

I wonder if all the naive hiveminders who gave Wikileaks money have any regrets. I mean, the founder of the organization has been accused of rape by two women, and now it appears his actions led to someone's death.

Edit - Downvotes, of course. Keep in mind what Assange himself said about guys like Fashi: "Well, they're informants, so if they get killed, they've got it coming to them. They deserve it." source

Assange literally handed his name over to the Iranian government.

Muslim scientist at CERN sentenced to 4 years for exchanging three dozen messages, some encrypted, with Al Qaeda’s regional affiliate in Algeria. by rfu410in worldnews

It may be irresponsible, but it's nothing like...

Can you expand logically on this.

Cutting a drop of water in half... with a bullet. [X-post r/waterporn] by wizgotin pics

[–]woofwoofwoof 2 points3 points ago

It doesn't work like that. You actually want a longer shutter speed, 1/250th or greater. You use a low ISO and a dark room. The strobe/flash is what is 1/20000th of a second or whatever, it makes the shot.

TIL that in 2011 there were more violent deaths in Mexico than in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia & Yemen combined. by Absoulutein todayilearned

[–]woofwoofwoof 78 points79 points ago

Well, yes, Mexico is bigger.

Pop. of Mexico = 113.4M

Pop. of Iraq = 32M Pop. of Afghanistan = 34.3M Pop. of Somalia = 9.3M Pop. of Yemen = 24M

So Mexico could have a homicide rate that's 12% less than those countries, and their numbers would still be higher overall. In fact, I'm going to go out on a limb and say the homicide rate in the US is higher than Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and Yemen combined.

Planet Venus seems close to earth - Spotted on May 3, 2012 by SOLIDSNAKE1000in science

[–]woofwoofwoof 1 point2 points ago

I doubt this is an accurate representation of Venus. It's more likely the camera's focusing system isn't calibrated and it's is showing us the unfocused light from Venus passing through the camera's aperture.

Depending on where it is in relation to Earth, Venus is only 9-65 arcseconds in angular diameter. For reference, 2.5 cm (1 inch) at 100 meters is about 1 arcminute (60 arcseconds).

Because the picture shows that Venus is fully lit by the sun, that implies that it's on the opposite side of the sun from Earth's position--meaning it would be closer to 9 arcseconds than 65.

A camera phone can't resolve shape at 9 arcseconds. It would be like a camera phone resolving a 4 mm shape at 100 meters, about the length of an medium sized ant.

I'm sure this will be downvoted, but Julian Assange essentially did the same thing with an indiscriminate Wikileaks document dump. As I recall, one of those documents was a classified list of potential targets.

Fun fact: Many adult drownings occur when someone has a heart attack, stroke or other debilitating attack while they are in deeper water. So drowning is a often times a secondary effect.

False. Numerous former Soviet bloc countries gave up their weapons after the fall of the USSR. Libya gave up its weapons program in exchange for dropped sanctions. Cuba probably had access to nuclear weapons but has since denounced them.
