Quitting today, while doing no fap aswell. by snelson989in stopsmoking

[–]zonkey_kong 1 point2 points ago

Right on man!

When I quit smoking I found myself going on a "control" binge - no fap, stopped eating meat, stopped smoking, started reading instead of watching tv, and a few other small things along those lines. I know some people suggest to focus on one goal at a time, but for me having a whole bunch really helped, and it even made me a more awesome person!

Rock on!

If I can do it, under these conditions, you can too. No really, you can! by mauxlyin stopsmoking

Hey man congrats! For myself I would consider the patch or smoking just one "cheating" - like you said some people would. However, I absolutely can dig on what you've accomplished, and if it feels like a victory for you then damnit you're doing the right thing! So good on you brother!

My words of encouragment are to stick with the C25K - running has really helped me get to where I am today (147 days!). You make so much progress and start to feel/look great, why ruin it with smoking! Just think about how healthy and trim youll be for that wedding day/night. Aw yeah!

All of the animal products in things you don't eat. Wool, for instance. People get a little picky about it because strict "ethical veganism" in that sense is such a major lifestyle shift - its becomes a lot more than what you eat. Try going through all your possessions and sorting out what you know does not have animal products.

I don't know any good resources off the top of my head but I'm sure Google would have plenty

The last time I went to a restaurant I ordered one of the three options on the fairly extensive menu that didn't have meat on it.

Guess what it had on it?

Meat. I didn't make a fuss, I traded dishes with a friend and all that shit, didnt bother the cook or waitress about it, even though I would think that would have been a fair option.

Just try to put yourself in our shoes, meatless doesn't always mean meatless. Don't take it too personal, we're just trying to make sure we don't get sick.

(Not to get into this whole stupid argument, just thought you might want to know about the difference)

A vegan is not someone who "does not eat anything deriving from animals."

A vegan is someone who does not use animal products.

What you've described is a dietary vegan.

Not to get in your face about it or anything, but it absolutely 100% contains nicotine.

Wow, thanks for the killer reply. I'll definitely look in to Savage Minds and Networked Anthro. I'm a fan of the idea of "public anthropology" on the whole - it never made sense to keep it locked in an ivory university tower.

I hear you on the Wire being a slightly problematic representation - I'm from MD myself. (I also oddly came very close to going to Towson and majoring in anthropology there, small world!)

As a fellow anthropologist (aka unemployed recent graduate) I'm curious as to how tumblr has worked out for you as a platform so far? Especially considering how it seems you're taking a multimedia approach.

I've thought about starting some sort of blog as a place to deposit thoughts, with the idea being eventually including it in a grad school app.

Also, yeah - the anthropologist in me has such a boner for the Wire. One of the best shows of all time.

Quite on the contrary I found that drinking heavily helped me stay away from smokes when I first quit. Healthy? Probably not, but it sure was fun.

Who knows if you'll respond, but I've always wondered this....

You probably have a fair amount of connections to some pretty famous people. Have you ever thought about putting that to the kind of use that could effect serious social change? Lets just start with Jimmy Kimmel and Snoop. You could get the two of them on board for something very simple - I'm thinking a 5 second video clip of them saying something to the effect of "My Name is Jimmy Kimmel, and I support the legalization of Gay Marriage" Or weed. Or ending tax cuts for the rich. Or whatever. Then you could edit the clips in to a continuous loop of famous people encouraging the world to get off its ass and do something.

It seems so simple, why couldn't that work? You buy a camera, work with their schedule, it would take less than five minutes of their time. No agents involved. No contracts. No money. Just people making a difference?

What do you think?

Is it possible that an entire civilization rose and fell without our knowing - sometime during the hundreds of millions of years of prehistory? by DatsNosin AskReddit

[–]zonkey_kong 0 points1 point ago

There are tens of thousands of years of anatomically modern humans all over the world. There have been REAL human civilations that we know nothing about. We don't know how old agriculture is. We know nothing about how entire civilizations came and went.

If you look up the history of humans wherever you live in the world (... with some exceptions) you'll find people that we know very little about. Believe in real human history and not Martians folks, that conspiracy theory bullshit is just dumbing down the population because they don't want you to know your own history, and by extension who you are.

Fuck that, keep your hair long.

Dude, you're 16. Part of being 16 is feeling uncomfortable about how you look sometimes. It happens to everyone. Instead of worrying about that bullshit just be awesome, because awesome people look good, and you too will one day be good looking. Find something physically active to do, try and stay in decent shape, and be a badass. You'll be touching boobs in no time!

If you're ever concerned about your looks just pretend you're Lemmy. Dude is ugly as sin and there are legions of babes that would bone him.

So, rock the fuck on my young brother.

Almost all of my dreams are lucid, and many of them incorporate the senses. Is that possible, or am I confused? by zonkey_kongin LucidDreaming

[–]zonkey_kong[S] 0 points1 point ago

I fully admit that it could have been coincidence. Really, that makes plenty of sense. The path of least resistance in my mind, however, is otherwise.

I sleep as well as anyone else, I suppose. Sometimes soundly, sometimes less so. The dreaming has stayed pretty consistent over various lifestyle changes that have impacted my sleep patterns.

Marijuana and other substances have no particular impact on it as far as I can tell. I've gone from a heavy regular user to abstaining and back and forth many times and dreams remain about constant. Same goes for other substances - I've had lucid dreams after drinking very heavily, for instance.

All entirely valid. Really I'm a very scientifically, rationally minded person. From the specifics of the situation (which I'd prefer not to post on the internet, sorry!) I can verify that I did have that dream the night of the death.

The alternative to your explanations is that a dying relative reached out to my consciousness as hers was leaving this plane of existence. Occam's razor, baby.
